Congressional Race, Quick Hits
The big name that announced early went on to win pretty easily.
There was a lot of scrambling and maneuvering behind the scenes for an opponent but ultimately Margo was the big fish and despite everyone hoping another big name would get in, the mayoral race became a blow out.
The race for congress is likely going to be the same thing. I get calls, tweets, texts, and emails from all over asking what the congressional race is going to look like and my answer is pretty simple - you're already watching it.
No other major candidate is getting in, Cesar Blanco has shut the door completely on a congressional run - so stop praying the rosary that he'll jump in.
This race is between County Judge Veronica Escobar and EPSID School Board Trustee Dori Fenenbock. I don't foresee any other major candidate out there that is going to get in the race. Sure, there's a couple of other candidates that have the best of intentions but they aren't serious candidates and don't have the ability to mount a meaningful threat to either of the front-runners.
Think about it, when one of the two major candidates is a school board trustee its a pretty good sign that its not going to be a race full of titans.
The other candidates are great people (well I only know one personally), but don't have an identifiable platform or a track-record to run on.
One of the also-rans has run many times before and never rises above a few points (single digits).
One doesn't even live in El Paso. No, I don't mean she lives in Horizon, Socorro, or Fabens. I mean freaking 746 miles away in Houston!
So now is the time to be asking the tough questions of the candidates. Now is the time to ask them about specific stances on policy. Now is that time for scrutiny. They both have Facebook pages. Ask them questions, demand their answers on the record...and in public.
Because before you know it, the filing deadline will have come and gone and you'll be whining about not knowing who to vote for or where they stand on issues.
